Kamus Urban Indonesia ini disusun oleh tim yang ditetapkan oleh Balai Bahasa Provinsi Jawa Barat, Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan.Perkembangan kosakata yang digunakan oleh masyarakat urban, terutama dalam media sosial dan internet sangat pesat. Perkembangan itu disebabkan oleh berbagai hal, seperti kebutuhan akan kosakata untuk mengekspresikan perasaan, sikap, dan pikiran, serta kreativitas pengguna bahasa.
Kreativitas tersebut harus mendapat apresiasi setidaknya berupa pendokumentasian agar kosakata yang muncul dapat dipelajari lebih lanjut. Oleh karena itu, tujuan penyusunan kamus urban ini adalah untuk menghimpun berbagai kosakota urban yang tersebar di berbagai media dan dari berbagai kalangan sehingga nantinya dapat digunakan secara luas oleh masyarakat. Selain itu, penyusunan kamus urban diharapkan dapat memberikan sumbangan bagi khazanah perkamusan Indonesia.
Sumber data Kamus Urban Indonesia ini adalah berbagai media massa cetak (surat kabar, majalah, tabloid) dan elektronik (televisi dan radio), buku-buku, kamus-kamus gaul yang sudah ada, internet, gadget, serta sandi-sandi Kepolisian serta TNI. Selain itu, ada beberapa informan dari kalangan mahasiswa dan masyarakat umum yang menjadi sumber data Kamus Urban Indonesia ini.
