Но потом я увидел, что нищие расковыривают свои болячки, смачивают их навозной жижей, – так садовник унавоживает землю, выпрашивая у неё багряный цветок, – и понял: смрад и зловоние – сокровище попрошаек. Нищие гордились друг перед другом своими язвами, бахвалились выручкой, и тот, кто получал больше других, возвышался в собственных глазах, чувствуя себя верховным жрецом при самой прекрасной из кумирен. Только из тщеславия приходили нищие к моему целителю, предвкушая, как поразится он обилию их зловонных язв. Защищая своё место под солнцем, они трясли изъязвлёнными обрубками, попечение о себе почитали почестями, примочки – поклонением. Но выздоровев, ощущали себя ненужными, не питая собой болезнь, – бесполезными, и во что бы то ни стало стремились вернуть себе свои язвы. И вновь сочась гноем, самодовольные и никчёмные, выстраивались они с плошками вдоль караванных дорог, обирая путников во имя своего зловонного бога...
